Our ability to target the nervous system and make a change in a patient’s Pain and Anxiety using holistic self-regulation tools is extremely valuable to our patients from a pain neuroscience perspective. In a health care climate of extensive polypharmacy and opioid use, both medical providers and patients are seeking effective non-pharmacological options for symptom relief. Clinically Acupressure shows promising results as an Integrative approach for Stress and Pain relief.
TeachPhysio was created by an amazing team and Rachna Mehta. Rachna has been practicing as a Physical Therapist in both outpatient hospital based and private practice settings since 2006. Read her story below.
“It was the year 2018 and I was seeing some very complex orthopedic and pelvic health patients. Some of these patients presented at the clinic with 15/10 pain. They were on high doses of pain medications ,were trying Acupuncture and other holistic therapies and were also seeing a multidisciplinary team of doctors and providers to find relief from their symptoms .
Both their anxiety and pain were at an all-time high. Acupuncture seemed to help but they could not practice it on themselves. So the question that came up was what else they could do to help themselves.
That’s when I started researching Acupuncture and found that Acupressure uses manual stimulation of Acupuncture points. The results in the clinic were amazing and some days I could bring these patients’ pain down from 15/10 to 9/10. This was a phenomenal short-term relief for them.
As I started looking at the evidence to find the most potent points on the human body, for both Acupuncture and Acupressure, I discovered that the information was so scattered. If I found a randomized control trial that talked about the benefits of a certain Acupoint , there were few pictures or descriptions as to the exact anatomical location of the Acupoints. I didn’t know where the points were located, and what else were they good for in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
As I pieced together this information, I found it so valuable for my own personal and clinical practice. This was the genesis of TeachPhysio courses as I wanted to share the benefits of Acupressure as a holistic non- pharmacological option with my peers and the medical community.
Physical Therapy is a very hands-on profession. We are musculoskeletal specialists, yet we look at the mind-body connections. The state of the mind determines the state of the body and specifically the state we hold our muscles in. If a person is tense and anxious, they tend to clench every muscle in their body and that can be one of the causes of their pain. If they could relax using a self-regulation practice such as Acupressure, the perception of pain would be remarkably decreased and they could function better”
TeachPhysio Courses Courses introduce Acupressure as a holistic Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapy which can be used within the rehabilitation framework for alleviating pain and anxiety in our patients. Our patient Case Studies are a collaborative effort to share complex patient cases.
